Why offshore investment?
Tax can be the driving force behind offshore investments for most, but for the majority of individuals considering offshore investment, tax is not directly an issue. It is generally in the pursuit of high returns that a lot of people look to investing offshore. Some individuals and companies with large assets want to protect them from litigation. Many offshore countries have laws that don't recognize foreign regulations or laws so the assets placed in these countries are not subject to seizure.
So why could a offshore investment be superior to an onshore investment?
Some will say due to a less regulated enviroment and freer operations of bankers, brokers, investment providers etc. and some will add that this also adds more risk.
Investing overseas
Some suggest that it makes sense to diversify investments globaly just as you would across industries. Different national economies move in different ways due to their different demographics, geographics, political and economic characteristics. An example of this would be overseas investors looking at Australian companies due to the rise of China and Australia being geographical commodity rich.
